Wrestling Spotlights (Northern Michigan Championships)
Steve Bassett
Onaway
Bassett, the muscular little man in his third year as the Cardinal's varsity 103-pounder, improved to 42-2 with a dominating performance on Saturday. Along the way, he dispatched of Corey Bidwell of Traverse City West, Josh Duncan of Munising, Justin Grabowski of Escanaba and J.J. Beauchamp of Gladstone.
He pinned everyone but Duncan, whom he shut out with a major decision. He recorded a fall over the
highly regarded Grabowski in 24 seconds. Against the talented Beauchamp, Bassett trailed 2-0 midway
through the second period when he scored a reversal with swift suddenness and then turned it quickly into a pin.
"It feels pretty good," said Bassett, who is a state-qualifier and some believe a legitimate contender
for the Div.4 state title at 103 next month. "I expected to face the kid from Esky in the finals, but we ended up in the same bracket. I was pretty happy with how I did."
Onaway coach Mark Grant was also pleased with Bassett's performance.
"He started out at 79 pounds two years ago as a freshman on the varsity and he ended up being a
regional qualifier," Grant said. "Last year, he weighed 90 pounds and he finished as runnerup in regionals and earned a spot at state. This year, he's been dominating almost everyone he faces. He has two losses, one to a Div.II state qualifier at 112 ponds and another to a Div.III kid who is really good."
Grant credits Bassett's work ethic and a passion for the sport as keys to his success. Bassett competes in out-of-state tournaments during the summer and works out regularly with weights. Bassett's goal is to wrestle at the college level.
