For many of you, tonight and tomorrow mark the start of the season and for some, the first time out on a competition mat. Many will not sleep at all the night before and that's ok. I want to wish all the wrestlers to do their best....yeah sometimes there is "luck". Few coaches tell you to wait until you feel "lucky" then do then do the move Be patient and remember the drills. Statistically HALF of you will NOT win! For those, think through what went wrong. One thing you need to win is respect....respect of your opponent, both coaches, the crowd and your family. Winning that means there was no loser. Respect is NOT shown by arguing, biting, throwing headgear, whining or blame. If you win, win graciously return the respect. In to many instances has wrestling received a bad name. I challenge you to step up. Poor sportsmanship should NOT be accepted by you, your teamates, partner, coach, parent or support persons. It needs to be confronted 1:1 and consequences need to be in place. High school wrestling is just a step in life....you WILL face harder battles. Many of you will graduate and serve us on foreign lands in the armed forces, some of you will be thrust as a role model for a newborn child of your own. Remember that 50% chance on the mat, unfortunately that is also the marriage chance. Many times that is because one or both never learned HOW to respect. Wrestle smart, be safe, do your best! Tonight, tomorrow and Saturday you have that chance....up the odds
